It's kind of late to start using something that may make your stomach rebel at the wrong time, but..... cheap old Ron uses table salt. Sometimes its mixed with 1/4 low-sodium salt for the extra potassium and put into empty gelatin capsules. Sometimes its just little paper envelopes from a fast-food ...

Haliburton again.

That time of year again. Anyone else going? I just entered the 50k again. Here's a link to some pictures, and here is my race report from 2 years ago in case anyone's curious. http://www.pbase.com/reneg/6am_start You know you're an ultra-runner runner when..................your running buddy suggest...

I lean a little bit toward 'even effort'. The problem is the race organizers specifically tell us to do 'even pace'. The people who write that stuff may not be runners. I like to start slow, maybe even take an extra walk break or two in the first 15 minutes, go just a little faster in the middle, an...

I'll be going by my chip time. The people who have an idea to come along with me will hang around and start pretty close to the same chip time. There is a little variance though, so that's why I'm serious about getting in a couple minutes ahead, not right on the time to the second. The poor devils r...

Ha! I've been looking at the StoneCat too. Same reason. I checked with my SO if she wanted to go to Maryland in November, and got the ok, went to register, and already full. So, the StoneCat race looks good, but its a little closer than I like to the Vermont Green Mountain. Oh oh I'd better register...

My time for my first 50 miler was 2 marathon times, plus 2 hours, kind of like Spaff. For a winter 50 miler, I'd count the cold as an adversary just like hills. If I slow down too much, I lose my 'warm-up', and run poorly and badly. I'm looking forward to another 50, maybe at Haliburton, to try out ...

I'll be pacing the full marathon for 5:00, just like I did in 2006. Saw and chatted with Mark, 'canalrunner' today at the warm-up run. We had good weather and a good run. I was told that my stuff was on the way, by mail. Somebody somewhere just doesn't get it about the shoes. Why can't we just show ...

I had it happen once badly when swimming a long swim in flat water. I associate it with loss of balance and orientation/proprioception. My solution is to sight on the horizon more, and oddly enough I feel better balanced when I swim with my contacts. I guess I see better. Well yeahhhhh, what I mean ...

It's good that now three rescue-capable swimmers have chimed in, and let me say that I would be happy to swim with you if I could. But, would you be willing to swim with me ? Jenn, would you go swimming with me and Kelodie, knowing that we couldn't do a darn thing for you? If not, do you insist on a...

Hahaha well Fishhog has made two good points. Like him, I think I'm more at risk on the highway riding my bike. Also like him, I have no friends. Well, no friends to swim with anyway, so I would have to quit swimming outdoors. The crucial point for me is that I always swim along the shore nowadays. ...

I routinely swim alone. I try to swim along the shore, or in a river where I'll always be close to shore. In a lake, deep water is best so you don't have to go out so far to get clear of the weeds. If I didn't do that, I more or less couldn't swim outdoors. Ask yourself - could someone rescue you if...

I got leg cramps towards the end of my bike ride yesterday in Carleton Place, and suffered all thru the run with them. It was about 1/2 and 1/2, run and walk. Sure wish I had been stronger on the bike, or took it easier, or something.

I will be there, doing the 1/2 Du like last year. In the spring I wanted to do the 1/2 Tri, but a few weeks ago I tried the river, and the current was too stiff for me. Good luck to those swimming. And of course, you too BK. Maybe we'll meet up in the t-zone.

Barrys Bay Tri

I admit that I do most races just for fun. That's why I go up to Barry's Bay every Canada Day weekend. Like most of you, there is a race or two every year that is a personal challenge, but the rest are for the fun and excitement of the day. Thats why I like to be a pace bunny, and thats why I do the...

Just got the latest issue from Fixing Your Feet, and it had a good article about the products from one of the sock manufacturers. Yes almost 2 years ago now. It was a cold, rainy day, and the trail was actually dangerous in spots. Fall weather can be so nice when its nice, but when its not, its a _______. I'd like to get back down and do a spin in the nice weather, and take a dip in the lake on the way by.

There is a bit of sticker shock when you first get it HA! I'll say. I'm not a food nut, but I prefer to eat simple un-manufactured foods. And I'm pretty thrifty. Hence my own capsules filled with table salt. They work for three or four hour runs in the hot weather for me and my running partner. As ...

Me too I drop the Gatorade for long runs. I take candy, brown rice syrup, sometimes a sandwich, and make my own salt capsules. Empty gelatin capsules filled with table salt. 1 per hour in the hot weather. Btw, there was an interesting article in the NY Times about heat exhaustion, and it prompted me...
