A NEW RM forum topic suggestion---RACING! UPDATE on PAGE 9
I don't see why having an additional forum dedicated to racing or to becoming faster would be perceived as threatening to some (maybe I read the comments wrong?). It's like the NET. If you want to go there and discuss the things being discussed there, then click on the thread. If not, well, read a different thread.
I'm not fast by any means, but I'm sure I'd learn a lot from the people who would post in such a forum. We have NRR for community (and most other threads turn into NRR anyway). Why is expanding in a different direction for a different target audience a bad thing?

What do you mean by NET?
Isn't that what the giant thread is called?
Yes.
Oh, ok, I guess I learned something today. I would have just called it a giant thread, and not confused it with someone indicating the internet as "the net" but now I know..

That would be the Guilt Free Neverending Thread in the NRR Forum.
Oh, ok, that makes more sense... THE NET... not just large threads in general..
wow, it's certainly time to go home... took me WAY to long to get that...
oh and I should stop hijacking this thread.. oops.

So, (true story) I'm training hard for Boston marathon. Hoping to PB, my post go in the speedy forum. After knee issues, I regroup and decide to run it as a tourist, just to finish. Take in the sights, a popular idea I'm told anyways. Do I switch threads, or do I now not fit in either?

This blackbird's mute gonna sing again

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

And all you drunkards crawl out

At that point - no you do not fit anywhere. Sorry. We'll miss you.
Seriously though - I think people could figure it out.If you're running it not to race but to have fun you're not likely looking for feedback from faster runners anymore in regard to that event right? It's not like you could never post there again but you likely wouldn't be bringing up your Boston Fun Run.
Of course, we'd all still be interested in how it went, what your plans are etc. That would do well in the General Running section.
Just my thoughts off the top of my head.

You don't fit in. If you can't make up your mind what you want, why should you bet let in?

I'm a little bit country, I'm a little bit rock'n'roll! Even this fall I ran PEC for the PB and NYC for the fun of it. So don't hate me when I come slumming down in the rec league in my Boston jacket.
Actually it obvious that we need 3 levels. One for ChrisL, Ironboy and myself, one for those faster and another for everyone slower.

I was just revisiting the BOP thread. Now, the disclaimer is I didn't read all 22 pages - just the first 16 or so.
It seems at that time the thread was a problem because of the idea that it excluded people and "how would you feel if we started a thread for faster runners only " and "we don't exclude people in RM" (those are actually paraphrases - not quotes).
Interesting.
As much as we may be one happy family it seems there are two distinct areas of interest. When we try to address those needs both/either camp are accused of being exclusionary.
Again then, I vote for having two threads - one for slower runners (which is NOT the same as new runners) and those who want to focus on winning age groups or more.

I think that's what BMan is getting at.
I would benefit from reading the "faster runners comments about their training, races, aspirations, mistakes and victories.
I would like to think that if I posted in this section, I would be taken seriously with critique based on my ability and not told to "shove off".
Interesting discussion and lots of honesty coming out here!!

Trying to catch up, but it seems imposible!
I guess I'm in the minority, but I've never felt like I had to tip-toe around comments when people ask about training and race results. I don't mean trash-talk-- I mean giving what I think is real advice. Perhaps that's why I'm sometimes unpopular.
I think the idea of separating "training" and "injuries" might work. As well as a separate forum for "Elite Racing" if there's enough interest there. It just seems like there isn't much interest for that on this site, so I go elsewhere for that.

I can't read 7 full pages on dialup so I apologize if I'm covering old ground.
I think its a great idea and fully support it.
I don't think elite is a dirty word. Elite is great. Speed shouldn't be a dirty word either.
As long as the speedy forum doesn't turn into letsrun.com junior, I'm all in favour of it. I think you all know what I mean - if I go into the speed forum and ask for advice improving my 22:30 5k pb, I still get treated with respect (unlike what would happen on most elite forums).
Carry on.

because it happened... what, 2 years ago? that doesn't really indicate a need for me, if such threads come about so rarely.
eta: we might be talking about different threads, but either way... I don't see a need.
Must be a different thread....this one was within the last 6 months...
Honeslty, I think DGrant summed up this attempt best....but with it seems that pretty much the WHOLE FIRST PAGE of possitive feedback is silenced by "but either way...I don't see a need".
as usual
It was worth a shot....sorry folks!

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse--
In thinking about this some more, I realize that the idea of a forum entitled "Racing" is a good one.
It was the premise that somehow we aren't allowed to talk about serious training, speed, and competition in the OTHER forums that put me off.

Perhaps some of them did check out our forums and saw us as a bunch of wannabes, slowpokes and amateurs. That we don't meet there needs as elite racers. A sexier, type-A Racing Forum might appeal to them a bit more. Just a thought...
