Shallonges and the spud Trophy - a history

Postby Ironboy » Sun Mar 11, 2012 7:13 pm

In Mark2.0's journal, discussion of our upcoming duel at ATB, the subject of the original Shallonge came up, since it happened to also be at Around the Bay (back in 2007).

So here are the key links in the history of the Shallonge and the associated Trophy.

From this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=26406 came the following quote (and a few more shallonges).
On May 27, 2008, Marg wrote:I believe the notion of a Shallonge (Challenge with a french accent pronounciation) was initiated by Lightning and Kmiklos.

I don't recall if it was ATB or a race prior but some playful banter turned into a ploy to throw potatoes on the course to trip each other up - or something like that and a comical thread took on a new life.

I could only find a post race report and not the banter referred to above - maybe someone has better luck with searching.
viewtopic.php?t=16244&highlight=shallonge

From this shallonge, came the trophy, in all its splendor:
viewtopic.php?t=16517&highlight=shallonge

Several more shallonges sparked from this concept and it travelled around in Ontario until finding a comfy resting place over the winter months. :-) Thanks La, for caring for spud and for now making him available for a new event!

Please, anyone, correct or fill in any facts I may have missed.

It was ATB 2007, UltraQueenga (kmiklos at the time) and lightening.

The original thread is here, page 12 and 13 have some banter, but the potatoes come into play on pages 22, 23

thanks for bumping that. even though i was the one who brought the potatoes to 122, i'd kind of forgotten how they fit in. but it was because i'd said this:

deerdree, on page 13 of that thread, wrote:When do the bets have to be in? This is a tough call. On one hand, Kinga beat Lightning at ATB last year. On the other hand, Lightning lives on the course and reliable witnesses have told me they've seen her out running it at 3am. She runs the monster hill every morning with full potato sacks under each arm.

i hear she's been running it this year while lugging tires with each arm.

Very happy to know that Mr. Spud is safe.....been worrying about the little fella.

So am I right in assuming that the Beckwith/Sauve ATB Shallonge Winner will get the trophy??

There is no way that Mark can WIN this ATB Shallonge then, as we may never ever see the Spud again ... Remember, how he engulfed 5lb burger and fries a couple of months back ??  :shifty:

Is there any trash talking going on for Vancouver? We gotta let this baby spend some time out west after ATB is done with.
I totally forgot about the trophy... what a hoot!

I don't think I'll be challenging Mark. :) I would have a chance at challenging Mike but only if he is pretty undertrained.

As it turns out, this was a pretty accurate foretelling of the way the PEC 2008 Shallonge ended up...
