Dylan Wykes in Rotterdam??

Postby Jwolf » Thu Apr 12, 2012 4:40 pm

In this morning's Vancouver Sun there were several articles previewing Sunday's Sun Run 10K race. This article talks about Eric Gillis coming to defend his Sun Run title from last year (and mentions his date with London later in the summer). Dylan Wykes came in second behind Gillis last year in the Sun Run, but the article says he is not running this year. The author claims he is racing the marathon in Rotterdam to try again to qualify for London. This is the first I heard of it, but thought maybe I was just out of it... but if it's true it seems that it was either a last-minute decision or he was just keeping quiet about it.

http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/date ... story.html

Canadian Running picked up on this too...

http://runningmagazine.ca/2012/04/secti ... rotterdam/

p.s. the Vancouver Sun article has the date wrong-- Rotterdam is THIS Sunday, same day as the Sun Run.

Anyone got his email? I have a card for him.

Run Canada and Canadian Running have both "confirmed it" on twitter. ;) We'll see...

Have they confirmed it or are they just repeating the original Vancouver Sun story? I don't follow Run Canada but Canadian Running was just repeating.

Well, Run Canada SEEMed to have an original source, but they aren't saying what it is.

Canadian Running updated their preview article when they got "confirmation" from Run Canada. Or at least I think that's how it went.

p.s. the Vancouver Sun article also has the Rotterdam date wrong--it's this Sunday, same day as the Sun Run.

I had to read that a few times I thought it was saying Watson is running Rotterdam but now I see it saying Wykes, and Watson, will be running Rotterdam.

Would be cool if he did. Would make it more interesting - maybe the two of them can push each other though it and duke it out against Gilles' time. I really want to see one or both of them make it. Its tough to see all these attempts and failures. These guys have so much talent and work crazy hard.

Don't suppose anyone want to make another prediction about his performance again?

I'm a real skeptic of Wykes qualifying. Yes his half-marathon pb of 1:02:14 does predict that he has qualifying potential, but its close, and my guess his he won't quite get there.......A couple of quality pacers would help him though?

Dylan Wykes in Rotterdam??

Postby Jwolf » Fri Apr 13, 2012 8:52 am

I'm very excited he decided to do this! And to think that the Vancouver Sun accidentally leaked it first.

Jamie- I'm not sure why you've written him off. He only needs about a minute off his best time- yes a minute is long but Rotterdam is known to be a fast course. There will be lots of people to pace near him too.

I'm not making any predictions but I think he has a good chance.

Well maybe he'll get it, but my guess is that his body needs a break.....I'm thinking that he's training continuously for this for quite some time now.

What time will we get the live feed? Anyone good with time zones? Sat midnight?

I think they're 6 hours ahead of us, which means the race would start at 4:30 am our time...I think.

Correct- starts at 10:30 in the Netherlands, so 4:30 Eastern, or 1:30 our time. ;)

Great news! It is awesome to have three Canadians in the Olympic marathon.
I run because it's fun.

In another life:
3 marathons including Boston twice (PB: 3:47), 6 halfs (PB: 1:45), 6 10k (PB: 46:41) and 3 5ks (PB: 21:00)

Twitter says 2:31 and 2:32 for Lanni and Krista respectively. I don't think that qualifies then. though.
