What? No Sulphur Springs trail race thread??
I was trying to remember if there was a Sulphur thread. I vaguely remember talking and talking about Sulphur to various people, but don't recall if it was in a thread or in messages. Anyway, so, WHO'S IN? This year they have a huge number of people signed up already in the 100 miler and the 100 mile relay. Lots of people already in all the other distances, so the trails are going to be busy.
Speaking of the trails there, we went out for a loop and a half on Sunday and boy, was it muddy in some places, especially in that new section that was added near the Reforestation trail. It will generate a lot of bad karma... and blisters.

A few months ago I was considering the possibility... but can't afford the trip right now. Maybe next year! Have fun!

Re: What? No Sulphur Springs trail race thread??
Thanks for starting the thread Kinga ...
I am going to attempt my first 100 miler. I feel reasonable confident that I am ready but then again just how does one prepare for the biggest physical / mental test of their entire life? I have been practicing what I like to call my 30 hour trail shuffle. It’s a really cool way to run going up down or flat becomes irrelevant .. its all the same! So I am prepared to give it my best effort and see what happens!
I know that the race has a new start/finish location. I want to camp out in my Durango Friday night and then stage my race from it on the Weekend. How close to the trail am I going to be able to park? I am going to pack a cooler with lots of goodies but I expect to get most of my calories from the aide stations. Kinga what kind of food does the Sulphur Springs run server up … by the way your rice pudding rocked at DG last year!
Did anyone notice who is signed up for the 100 mile relay… hint “Float On”.

That must be a joke - just saw it myself! Really? April Fool's is long gone.
I had originally harboured ambitions of doing the 100 mile, but I have decided that I am not ready for it. My winter training just did not hit the levels that I believe would be necessary to give it my best shot.
That said, I loved the race last year (did 50 miles). So I will make a call on whether to do the 50k soon based on (a) how Toronto Marathon goes and (b) if I can snag a lift off some kind generous Torontonian to the race!

Not such a stretch really, he has done the 25 K Run For the Toad a couple of times. Yes he won.
I'm in for 25 again at Sulphur, my usual. Fifth time there at that distance, sixth time overall running it.

Re: What? No Sulphur Springs trail race thread??
PYP was too much fun to miss the next OUS/OTS event. I am this close to 50K training requirements, but would prefer to attempt to stay injury free for part of this year... So, 25K for me and 50M for Curly. Another reason for running "only" 25K is that I had a blast at the aid station last year. You get to be really annoying to the wasted 50M and 100M runners, tell them bad jokes and they almost appreciate it! I think they shift their angst from all the physical ailments to the annoying AS volunteer!

I see... my bad. Leaving that aside, I'm surprised he's going for it - would have thought he would be concentrating on road-work this summer, ahead of Waterfront Marathon.
Re: What? No Sulphur Springs trail race thread??
Will most likely be there for the 50k...it's so close to home. It will be my longest race to date and will hopefully give me an idea of what I'm in for in the 56k at Limberlost. Westgrey, there is two fair sized parking lots at the start/finish. Not sure how much is going to be roped off for race day if any.
Re: What? No Sulphur Springs trail race thread??
I'm in for the 100. Did the 50mile last year and really enjoyed the course. I'm going to Seaton tomorrow morning to get more mud practice in.

Hmm,
Have not run for 3 weeks. Torn calf muscle. Suppose to run Toronto next week. Will give it a try next weekend and then decide if I will do the 100 miler. Training is over rated and after 30 miles, it is a death march anyways.

I haven’t exactly been doing what I thought I needed to leading up to the 100 miler. You need to log some long miles in order to get to the start line but just how many depends on what it is you are trying to do. I would say that I feel reasonably well prepared to complete the run before the 30 hour cutoff. On the other hand sub 24 hours…now way , no for a moment not even in my dreams and I have been dreaming allot.

Re: What? No Sulphur Springs trail race thread??
We went out for a run on Saturday morning and then again Sunday evening. The course is drying up nicely after all the rain, but there are three major mud spots that are a total foot soaker at the moment. Two of these spots will probably dry up in the next three weeks, but that evil boggy area on the new course addition will never dry up, which means wet feet on every loop x 8 = blisters. I see a lot of dropouts due to bad blisters due to wet feet. Bring extra shoes and socks, just in case...
Food-wise, they have the usual ultra fare, plus, Scholzy's Deli will have real food in the afternoon. Dieter usually has lasagna and some form of soup, sandwiches. The Gatehouse AS has really good stuff, too. I had chicken shishkebobs there, plus they have sandwiches, hot stuff and all kinds of fresh fruits and veggies. And you can have a drop bag there, too, if you're concerned. The start finish is usually not that great in terms of food, because they assume that's where people have their loot bags, but with the new RD, maybe they make an effort. Safest thing is to bring your food and put your cooler near the trail. That's what we're doing. We're usually using frozen waterbottles as ice packs to keep things cold in the coolers.
Looking forward to running Sulphur Springs 100 again. It will be my third time running the 100 there, my 9th 100 miler. Exciting...

Re: What? No Sulphur Springs trail race thread??
My plan for 2011 had me running the 50 miler, but after injury time/sinus surgery, my fitness level precludes me from even being in the same postal code during this race weekend.
Unless something dramatic happens, I'll pencil myself into the 25 k with a very light pencil (but won't actually add my name to the list just yet).

My first 50..... just 50k; made my final decision today after my slow Mississauga Marathon (but running not walking all the way to the finish).
The mud will be a huge factor in this race. there is no chance it will dry out, and not only the new section

Re: What? No Sulphur Springs trail race thread??
Most sections were really good Saturday, even in the rain. Sulphur creek bypass is ugly but it always is and the bog crossing on G.Donald will get real ugly later in the Day but the rest of the coarse has made a huge improvement over hte last few weeks.Construction is finished on hilltop trail and it has been graded smooth so it will be ready for the race as well. With two weeks to go if we end up with some sun the week prior to the race it should be a fast coarse.
