Where The He11 Did That Girl Come From. (With A Pic)
So, I signed up for the Highland Games 5 Miler. I felt pretty good about it. Heck it's only 8K how hard can that be....
Minutes before the start, I'm seeing all the young speedsters here. Yikes, I'm thinking this might have been a mistake. OK, you know what, I can have a slice of humble pie. I bet it will be tasty.
Ugh, the heat and high humidity are not my friends either, this will be a nasty event.
"Excuse, what's that? 4 of the 5 miles are on gravel?" Ok, now I just have to laugh, cuz it's looking grim. I just hate to run on gravel.
So we're off. I'm not into the right mindset, so I'm just trying for a steady pace. A 6:52 first mile. Not bad. Maybe it will be an OK day.
Mile 2 seemed to go by fast (It did, it was a 6:29). And I thought "40 percent done". I started passing a few people here and there. Lots of younger runners have scuffling feet now. One young fellow, must hate to have me ahead of me, I am on a steady pace, but as I pass him, he puts out an extra effort to pull ahead of me, he does this challenging thing about 4 times then he drops away.
Mile 3 was down by the river, it was 24 degrees, but easily 30 plus by the river, no a hint of a breeze, the humidity was BAD. I stopped to get water. But it didn't hurt me too much, a 7:11 mile, a couple of people passed me, but I passed just as many.
Mile 4, Was me labouring through the heat. And shuddered under the cold mist, sprayed from a firetruck (big mistake) I actually had a hard time breathing due to the cold shock. Then more water at the last water stop. This was definately my worse mile, More people passed me than I passed, although I was passing a few.
Mile 5. Was fun, I passed an elite looking fellow right at the 4 mile marker, actually, I don't think I was passed at all during this last mile, during a long strip down the paved street, I slowly reeled in the guy in front of me in the red bluenose shirt, then the final onto the track, I pass a few people on the track, about 100 meters left and I glance over my shoulder, there is a girl about 5 meters behind me. I figure just keep this pace, and I'll be cool.
That was not to be, a mere second or two later I hear crunch crunch, I then catch her out of there corner of my eye. "NO WAY" goes through my head, I also had visions of Shinsplits Wolfe Island finish, and visions of just about every one of B-Man's finishs I gave it my all, we were nose to nose the entire length of the 100 meters, at one point I thought, "GD, I can't hold this pace" But then I thought, my strides must be destroying her and then "push it"
It was that close, beating her by a meter at the end. Had she started her kick a little later, she probably would have had me.
At the end of the chute I couldn't help it, I looked her in the eye and out slipped "Nice try..."
37:27 for 5 Miles, Not the fastest race I've run, but I am very content.

Finally... photobucket has been not my friend, but here is a shot of the finish, Of course, she wasn't at London to see my finish so I guess my effort surprised her.
And no Trix, it wasn't a woman, but some bizaroo high school elite sprinting track girl...
Actually, I think she was using some sort of performance enhancing drug...

I can't see the picture B, but I TOTALLY have the image in my head! I've been lucky enough to see that charge to the finish.. no freaking way was some scrawny little, long-legged girly going to beat you!
Nice work on the splits though! You've been working hard by the looks of things
eta: after viewing the photo.. That totally rocks & man - I would never sneak up behind you in a race (not that I could.. lol)

Great photo!!!
C'mon Q, she DOES NOT look like the type to use drugs... she just looks like a run-of-the-mill high school kid who likes to run fast.
I bet she was surprised by your effort; you are going great guns. You wanted it more than she did...
Very nice time & passionate reporting
Good race Brendan! Well done!
