1st full ATB

Postby AjaxRunner » Mon Mar 31, 2014 8:56 am

I have done the 3-person relay at Around The Bay, but this was the first time running the full distance, also my longest race to date.

Originally the plan was to get sub-2:15, but with the winter we have had, plus with some physical challeneges through the winter, that was not to be in the cards. The new goal was to get in under 2:30.

Like everybody else, I struggled with finding the right clothes, or should I say amount of clothes to wear. Ended up with tights, long sleeve shirt, gloved and a togue. The togue got discarded at the 6k mark. In the end I probably would have been best off with shorts and a long sleeve shirt. I never really got too hot though. The day was forecasted to be very windy, I thought it really wasn't as bad out on the couse, as I thought it would be.

I ran the first 10k of the relay last year, so I certainly noticed the different route this year. The couple of overpasses certainly add a little extra challenge, but I didn't think it was too bad.

After hearing all the stories about the hills in the last 10k, I was a little worried about that. I have to say that it really wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Yes the last hill is a doozy, but everything before that I would classify as light rollers.

I finished the race in 2:23:31 with a slight positive split of about 30 seconds. My 10k splits were 47:49 47:38 and 48:04. 10k to 15k was in 23:45 and 15K to 20K in 23:43.

Sub 2:15 is certainly within the realm of possibilities. This was a decent tune up for Mississauga, solid month of training in April coming up.

Excellent run Justin! Nice first shot at the distance. This is a difficult race to pace evenly and you did it well.

Looks like your training is going really well.
