As usual, I was quite anxious about this race. I get this way before every race. My training had been going alright but last year my time had slipped to over 24 minutes. I really wanted to run the race in 24 minutes or less but I didn’t know if really I could. My running pace seemed to have gotten stuck at over 5 minutes per k. In recent weeks, I had been running some half k intervals to bring my speed up.
The weather was perfect. The atmosphere was great. The first stretch down Brant St. to Lakeshore Rd. was the usual stampede with me in the middle, running way over my head. I got things under control during the first k which only took 4:20. I wanted to maintain a pace of 4:45 to 4:50 per k for the whole race. It was hard work but I managed to do so by tagging on to some good runners who were holding a similar pace and just focusing on my breathing and form. The run was very hard, maximum effort, but unlike in previous years where I thought there was a good chance I’d crash and burn, this year I felt that I could hold the pace for the duration.
In the last k, I passed my unknowing “pacer” and managed to actually increase my speed for a nice finish. I crossed the line and kept walking trying not to barf until things settled down. Ah … the 5K … always a treat!
Thanks for reading.

Thanks Ken but it pales in comparison with your racing history.
