A friend of mine in Vancouver writes this blog: http://www.swapmeat.ca/
Vegan. Lots of gluten-free stuff, too.

I don't read it because I like meat and gluten!!

www.summertomato.com is a great website. Some recipes, but mainly insights from a PhD foodie about food/health issues.

I started reading her a couple of months ago, and have made several of her recipes. Especially love her "boatmeal" - like an oatmeal cake!

Some of my faves not mentioned above that I actually cook from are:

http://www.joythebaker.com/blog/ (I've had success with everything i've baked from her)

http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/ (lots of recipes - some seem strange, but i like the variety for the slowcooker).

Are you guys on pinterest? I get a lot of my recipe ideas from there now.

What bugs me about her is that her PhD is in an area not related to food. I don't like that she she implies (from omission, just stating she is a trained 'scientist') that her PhD is in a food related area. It is totally fine to write on an area not related to your PhD, but don't stick the initials next to your name just to try to get extra cred (cynical me is thinking 'you have a freakin' PhD, so what?').

She has her education listed on her blog, so she's not really hiding anything-- in my view she is a scientist, so her views and descriptions are likely more critical than someone who is just a foodie (i.e., hobbyist). There aren't that many people that get Ph.D's in something as specific as food science anyway.

It's like Alex Hutchinson-- his Ph.D. is in physics, yet now he writes about exercise science.

To me, her science-related PhD does give a tremendous amount of credibility. Many of her posts are critiques of the latest food studies that I myself wouldn't understand, so I find it very valuable to get the opinion of somebody with a neuroscience PhD who a) is presumably very intelligent and b) has read and critiqued a lot of scientific studies.

I feel she has a nice balance. Much of her stuff is about an enviable lifestyle (she's hot, she does interesting things, she's immersed in the culture of a cool city (SF)) but she's also an intellectual heavyweight.

I don't want to detract from the original (very yummy) thread, but I still disagree to a large extent and I don't think she is up front enough about it (esp her writings in Huffington Post etc). But, if you both think it is ok, I can't wait to use my credentials inappropriately to give me cred  (just kidding, well, sort of  ).
