Chia Seeds

Postby NewFinnLoper » Wed Jan 30, 2013 11:39 am

Not sure if there's an existing topic on chia seeds...but picked up a bag at Costco and just wondering how you eat/use them.

I just sprinkled some on my apples and Greek Yoghurt for breakfast...

The package said to use in salads, muffins etc.

I usually eat it as a pudding. Don't have an exact recipe, but about 1/4 cup of seeds with 1/2 - 3/4 of milk (cow, almond, coconut, whatever) let sit, I add a dollop of maple syrup, or a mashed banana. Dark chocolate chips if that tickles your fancy or raisins. Yummy!

They get gelatinous, like tapioca, when you let them soak in liquid. I tend to just put them in stuff (muffins, like you said). I haven't in a while, though.

I sprinkle mine in my fruit smoothies in the morning -- I don't even notice them (I ground mine first though)....

Chia Seeds

Any time I've tried to use them they don't swell up and I feel like I'm eating bird seed. Perhaps I have had a bad batch.

I've used them in smoothies, oatmeal and homemade protein bars. Vegan friends have used the soaked version as an egg replacement.

I want to try these again since clearly I wasn't doing it right- how long do they soak for?

I threw a couple spoonfuls on my yoghurt and they were starting to swell up pretty good by the time I finished...about 5 minutes.

I am going to try IB's pudding idea because I love tapioca pudding and this sounds a lot like it.

I throw them in my smoothies but I've also had them in yoghurt or in oatmeal. I've added them to snack bars that I've made too.
