Thanks for that cecile!! I should know better than to believe on-line rumours. I knew 5000 sounded like way too many.

Congrats to all the Maniacs who ran today, especially as everyone finished! Both my running groups friends finished as well. Must have been a really tough day on the road and I'm sure there will be lots of stories to tell...for a long, long time. And thanks to those who kept posting the updates.

One Kingston runner I know DNF'd...she's 59 and generally runs a 3:40-3:45 marathon. She dropped at 15km and posted on FB that she was never going to run another Full...a few of us told her to have a couple beers and rethink...she's an excellent runner and loves the marathon distance.
My friend Randy ran 3:01...crazy...he generally runs about 2:55...so he obviously managed the heat well.

deerdree wrote:allegedly, they're taking the chip off before they cross the start line, so there's no evidence (other than pictures, maybe) that they ran the race. on paper, they DNS'ed the race, which is one of the requirements for being able to defer to next year.
if they took off the chip after they'd crossed the start line, then yes, it would register as a DNF and they wouldn't be allowed to defer.

Re: 2012 Boston Marathon Tracking Thread
Very relieved that everyone I was tracking finished safely. I feel bad for some of them who had really crappy races.
I'm glad to hear that the number of deferrals is lower than first reported. I also think it would be crappy of people who had deferred to take off their chips. Though if we're only talking about 450 runners, then likely some people might have decided to take off their chips simply because they didn't want to record a bad time (and didn't actually take a deferral). Though (with all due respect to ChrisL) might also be the product of the rumour mill.
I also agree with Mark (and others, in Mark's training thread) who said that the BAA has opened a Pandora's box with this whole deferral process. I get that they want to CYA and protect runners, but offering deferrals is a bit over the top.

WOW - what a day!! I was so sad when we had to turn off the televised reporting, but trying to explain what was happening to runners scared the kids. Needless to say, I have a household who is thrilled to learn the Maniacs are all safe and sound

Under dangerous conditions like that it's in the BAA's and the city's best interest to have as few marathoners on the roads as possible, so they offered a (very small) incentive to persuade people to not run.
It's good that they keep little tools like that in their box, because the next step would be canceling that year's race altogether.

Agreed! I think it's (potentially)dangerous to run in the heat. It is tough on the mind, body and soul of a runner. I'm sure it was a difficult decision for those that did choose deferral, after all they did come to Boston fully trained to run a marathon...

Re: 2012 Boston Marathon Tracking Thread
congratulations to everyone that has finished!
I find the deferral process still interesting......what I find more interesting from the RW report listed was the number of people that registered that didn't run!
Wow - 4000 people registered and didn't start, yet, only 427 of them picked up their bibs? So, 3500 didn't go to Boston? (I guess JoggerBarbie is one of those people, but, that number still seems high - and unfortunate for all those that didn't get to register!)

A question for those who were in the infamous Chicago Marathon, the year it was stopped, and/or rather, cut the course short .... Do you still feel the same way today, that you felt on that day, when the Race Organizers stopped the race in mid-stream?
