Fall Tour starts in Paradise
After months of talking, we finally got down to the running! Lots of maniacs showed up at Paradise Lake, some new faces and some more familiar, for Ultrarune's annual trail race. The people were the best part of this event, from volunteers like Tortoise to out hosts Erin and Doug for the meet and greet. Well maybe the dogs were the best part, that Hudson sure is a charmer!
The rain held off, so the course was pretty fast. Dave and I went out together, keeping up a pretty good pace for the first lap. No competion going on here, right? But still, our first 5 K split was 21:36? Not this guy, I guessed it was about 4.5 K. Ryne said after that it was only 80 M short of 5 K , but... I wish I was that fast, there are a couple tricky sections. After 2 laps, 44 minutes, so about a 22:30 lap. Third lap felt like we slowed down, but the times held up. Dave went ahead a bit during this section, but never by much. I thinhk that if he had pushed it here, I might have folded because I was dragging. It was neat seeing the others out on the course, which often doubled back on itself.
The fourth lap of course we picked it up again, at least by perceived effort. Still, with about 5 minutes to go, Dave pulled ahead again. Once again I thought it was over for me, but I managed to stick with him. I mentioned to Dave that we must be in the last K. Eventually, I could hear the finish line, and was anticipating the last path. Dave went wide! I cut to the inside and just gave'r. People say that Dave looked surprised when I got maybe 20 feet ahead , and he was closing fast; he even passed me on the second mat. But the first mat said I got him by 1 second. What a hoot!
I couldn't have written an ending like that to the first of our ten races.
At the awards ceremony, both Kristi and I won door prizes of a coupon for a pair of Montrail trail running shoes ! Kinda my day, what? Still, the best part was the people, sitting around after at Erin and Doug's house talking. Maybe recruited a few new maniacs, too. Special thanks to Ryne and Jenn for putting on a fun event, whatever the distance.

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day
So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day
This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day
So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

Sheldon... you (and Dave) both looked so strong at the finish... I wish I had my camera to capture the show down at the finish line...
Glad to finally meet Heather, and Bud as well... Hope the poor pup isn't too tired from keeping Hudson in check!

I'm hoping next Sunday, at the London Springbank Half, if he shows.

Here is a picture of my splits and map from my Garmin 205. It says we ran 16.7 K, for what its worth. The results page says Dave and I ran a 4:27/K pace, Garmin says 5:18.

Based on perceived exertion, that felt like about 5:00/km. I'd agree with the 18K guesstimate.
I don't think it was the tree cover that caused the Garmin discrepancy... there were just so many tight switchback where in 10 seconds we might have covered 25 or 30m, but as the crow flies we went 4 feet...
