Re: Millarville "Run To The Farmers' Market" Half Marathon
I keep thinking about doing this one since I'm a fan of racing and farmer's markets; unfortunately this is the 3rd year in a row I've thought too long and it sold out. I've heard great things about everything but the speed of the course, and frankly who cares on races like this, right? Hope everyone...

Re: Timeless Running
Personally I glance at my Garmin a couple of times in the first kilometer to see if I'm near my goal pace, then only check at the kilometer markings. Any deviation between Garmin and true distance are noticeable at that point and it saves math on the pace band/watch. Instant pace can be erratic enou...

I'm a poor skater but really like playing hockey. Put me on a team of fun people with a high tolerance for a pylon and I'll play for years. If said team gets "serious" I'll drop off because I'm affecting everyone else's enjoyment by continually getting beaten to the outside or lofting soft...

Re: School me on sweat saltiness
The salt level in sweat varies due to a number of factors, the main ones being salt in your diet and your hydration level. Your body tightly controls sodium levels and extremely salty sweat might indicate you have too much salt and/or too little water in your system, Another factor might be the weat...

Re: Speed Work Training
Successful Endurance athletes from a wide variety of sports seem to have that in common: a much wider range of training paces than "average" athletes. Over the whole year 80-90% of their training is quite low intensity, and most of the rest is pretty high intensiy, with not much training i...

Re: Speed Work Training
Good but I suggest many people skimming the article might come away with the wrong impression. McMillan is using a very specific definition of "speedwork" here, not the more common and general definition. "For this article, speed work refers to reps performed at your VO2 max pace (pac...

So she is well educated enough to understand the effects of the drug she is taking, she is a competitive Masters runner, she was sent a warning they were testing, she did in fact place in her division and she's shocked she was banned? She didn't have to go off the drugs, she could have gotten a doct...

Re: Nausea and Vomiting in the Marathon
Running at high intensity re-directs blood flow from your digestive system to your working muscles and skin surface (to promote cooling): this dramatically reduces your ability to absorb nutrients. If you are consuming more than you can digest that could very easily start some issues, as could takin...

True Ian, but we're all human. We're far more likely to act on items that directly affect us or which we can closely relate to than things which we are at a distance from (emotionally). Having said that, SOMETIMES people do very selfless things too! I don't have any sympathy for this cheater and fee...

Re: "Better" marathon predictor calculator
I'm glad to see another attempt to produce a more accurate "predictor". Since there are always going to be people who have better or worse than average endurance, no predictor can produce a number that will work for everyone. I've always preferred one that produced the AVERAGE result and l...

Re: Getting back into running...
Shin splints are basically caused when the small muscles on the front of your shin (tibialis anterior) take too much of a beating. This is common in new runners because those muscles work MUCH harder during running than when you are walking. When you run you leave the ground, and during the landing ...

Re: Speed, or endurance what's more beneficial to focus on?
Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your new commitment! The key to making this a success in the long term will be consistency, and that means staying healthy and motivated. Given time and dicipline either of your approaches COULD work, but in practice working mostly on endurance is where t...

Re: The Long Run in Marathon training
The effect of long runs, overall mileage, pace of your average run and speedwork all factor into training. The challenge when your goal is getting faster is building a program which keeps you healthy while creating enough of the right stress to get your body to rebuild itself better, stronger, faste...

Re: The Long Run in Marathon training
Correlation is not the same as causation and if you believe the marathon convertor website, the 3:47 in Victoria translates into a 4:05 in Calgary and thus I cut my mileage in half and by one measure actually ran the race much faster and by the other measure, roughly the same. That comparison caugh...

Powerlifting 101. I think the anti-science angle is overdone, since the science of lifting for strength has suggested compound exercises (like the one listed) over isolation exercises for more than a decade. It was what I taught when I was a gym owner and trainer in the late 90's. Same goes for low ...

I signed up for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (Full distance) and I'm doing it in memory of a loved one and to lose weight. I've never been a runner, and I think the longest distance I've run without stopping is 2 km (last weekend!!!). I'm 28 years old, 5' 11", 225 lbs. My questio...

Re: Have you lost too much weight trying to get faster?
The interesting thing to me would be WHY people got slower. Losing fat does not make you weaker, losing muscle does. Losing fat doesn't make your immune system weak (at least until extremely low levels), but poor nutrition might. I've been competitively involved in two sports that had a premium on s...

Might be interesting if/when Brendan and Tom meet up next: two nice guys with blazing distance speed.

If you mean you miss Groat Road and McKinnon Ravine in the marathon then... well no one liked them very much while running them. That course went from one of the slower in Canada to one of the fastest routes in one year. The start / finish is nearly back where it used to be (now by the conference ce...

It was an unwise move by Meb's competitors, nothing more. All the Africans were watching the favorites, and none of them wanted to push the pace to chase. When Chebet finally went it was too late. Re: Long distance running and the risk of Coronary Artery Pl
Let me start with a simple truth: there is such a thing as "too much" running. This is just common sense. On the other hand, if you love exercise and are wondering whether you should cut back to prolong your life, the results above make it pretty clear that running an hour a day is certai...
