Re: "The Long View"

Many runners want to use the 10% per week guideline for increasing their mileage. This can lead to overtraining very quickly. A 50km a week runner increases 10% per week for 10 weeks and, suddenly, their at 130km per week. While some bodies can handle this type of increase, it's more likely going to...

Re: How cold is too cold?

-25c including the windchill is about my limit (pushed that tonight!). I wear two layers on the legs (one windproof) and three on the upper body (again, one windproof). A double layer of mitts and an extra warm toque. The feet have never been a problem so it's a single layer of tech socks. I try to ...

Re: Slippery Sunday

The course designer for the Pig Pen Trail Run (Windsor, Ontario) is just a little psychotic! A double looped 8km XC race that included a flight of metal stairs, fallen logs to be hurdled, half fallen trees to be ducked under, a tree 'bridge' over a creek, and something called Suicide Hill. That's pr...

Re: Shoe Advice

I have managed a running store in the past and we used the three year figure as the lifespan of a shoe in the box. What isn't known about that shoe is the manufacture date. Last year's model may already be three years old if it was from one of the early production runs. Getting a sale price is alway...

Re: From HR to time intervals

Hi toobusy, I am wondering about the training technique of running until you hit the top end of the heart rate zone and then walking until recovered. For long distance running, it may be more effective to run at a slightly easier pace and reduce or even get rid of the walking breaks. I do believe ru...

Re: ATB Training Option?

I believe that any time you step up in distance, it should be done as a training run not as a race. The body (and mind) need to get use to hitting the distance reasonably comfortably. Then one can work on improving performance at that distance. The training run can be done in a race with all the ben...

Re: Soggy Saturday

Delayed today's long run to avoid the soggy stuff. The afternoon still had damp feel to it.
A little under 25km in a little under two hours.

Re: Windy Wednesday

Well, it wasn't windy in Windsor today. This evening I ran a steady 14k and included the Riverfront path so I could enjoy the lights of Detroit across the river.

Re: 30K World Record: Does it bring the 2:02 Marathon any ne

To throw in my two cents worth, I feel the two hour marathon barrier will fall much like the four minute mile did. Several runners will bump up against it (2:01's, 2:02’s, 2:03’s) and people will say sub 2:00:00 can’t be done. Then along comes some guy and throws down a 1:59:59. And then we’ll see s...

Re: December 2012

I like running a few more kilometres than some folks... not as many as others. Still, it's hard to get all the distance done some days. Accountability is a good thing. I'm aiming for between 360-400 kms for December. The long race goal isn't fully decided upon just yet but whatever it will be it wil...

17km steady done in the drizzle. I don't know about getting a triple workout done today but stretching is now in order.
