Generally it shouldn't require a different style of running. Only a shorter stride, and therefore less effort and resulting in a slower pace. If you keep your turnover number the same but shorten you're stride, you go slower without any breaking action. Those times when a slower pace "works", that'...

They must be tougher than transplanted BC'ers :) This transplanted BC'er still can't get used to winter lasting until April, but doesn't miss those rainy winters one bit. When DH and I spend Christmas in B.C., it seems like I spend the whole trip trying to stay warm, LOL. The first time someone tol...

Personally, I prefer "long run" to LSD because if a true LSD means running 45 to 60 seconds slower than race pace, then I have maybe done one of those in my life and that was because I had a lot of help from someone else setting the pace. After > 10 years of running just to run, with very little res...

There have been some very interesting answers here. For myself, a lot of it is just wanting to know what it's like to run in what seems to be the world's most famous marathon, the one "everybody" has heard of (even if they know nothing about marathons). So many people say that it's an unforgettable,...

I'm very excited about the prospect of watching the Women's Olympic Trials...I think jwolf and I are hoping to meet up at that event :D So perhaps I'll get to meet both of you? Seems a little weird to go all the way to Boston to meet someone from Kingston and someone from Vancouver when I have conn...

Interesting site! I plugged in my Scotiabank marathon time from two weeks ago and got the following results: McMillan 30K: 2:29:19 vs ATB 2007 2:28:31 McMillan Half: 1:41:59 vs Kingston Half 2007 1:43:58 Definitely bookmarking this - as someone said earlier, it's a great reference for training paces...

Anybody out there have a training plan? Am I nuts to even think about running 30km when I haven't even run a 1/2 in 2 years?? The web site has a training plan specifically for the race and I used it last year as a general guide. I don't think you're nuts but what do I know?!?! Good luck :)

I saw a guy like that at the Limeston Half this year in Kingston. Actually, I don't recall if he had the full fatigues but I do remember a large military-style back pack.

Thinking about this thread today (and coming back to find it much longer!) a couple of things occurred to me: 1) the average non-runner who decides to train for a marathon may not even realise that there are shorter races out there. Then, when they find out, they decide to train for the marathon any...

Most of us are finding some mixture of speed and distance. Some of us prefer short distances, some long, some trails, some roads, you name it. And we all find the right mix that works for our bodies and our goals. If someone doesn't care about speed... who are we to tell them they *should*? Having ...

It isn't that they aren't fun, the fun just doesn't last long enough. It's a personal thing. I don't get in the car for an event that will last less time than the car ride. I don't get in the car for a bike ride under three hours, either. FWIW, I feel exactly the same way. If the logistics of getti...

Just loved watching that come-from-behind sprint victory - I had read about it but nothing beats actually seeing it. Yes, Run26.2 , I gasped aloud when I saw the archway down and also spotted the BQ times error. BTW, did anyone else kind of cringe when the one announcer kept referring to "pacemakers...

Now that Scotiabank is done and (hurray!) I'm not injured my tentative 2008 schedule is: Around the Bay - March Boston - April Kingston 5 K - April Scotiabank Half - September NYC Marathon - November The first two are pretty much written in stone, but not sure about the rest. I have done the April h...

Unless (like me) you have a stomach that seems to tolerate only one particular sport drink! For the half I would do okay with just water from the aid stations but for the full carrying my own drink was pretty much a necessity.

Hey, dgrant , I also ran the marathon for the first time this year, after doing the half for the first time last year, and think your comments are spot on. Overall it was a great experience. My only real issue was with the start. I arrived with two people in what should have been plenty of time, but...
