Re: Predict my IM Aus time
Made it to 10k on the run but cramping in my neck, back, calves, quads and hamstrings had me to a walk with no real expectation of improvement. It started raining and I got cold; I didn't want to walk for 6hrs to get a medal I really didn't care about. I'm shattered; the swim was better than expecte...

Re: Predict my IM Aus time
Race day is forecast to be 24C, cloudy, anything between 60-90% chance of rain and 15km/hr winds. I'll take that, especially if the rain stays away for the middle of the day while we're riding. My bib is 967, my mate's is 1339. We are planning to start later in the rolling start so I reckon I'll be ...

Re: Predict my IM Aus time
Update; Race day weather is going to be wet and potentially windy. The wind will be in our faces on the way out and following coming back on bike. My friend is under-trained on the bike and expecting to ride about the same as I am - around 7h. His longest ride is only 125km - I reckon he's going to ...

Predict my IM Aus time
Just for fun; as anyone following my journal knows, I haven't really put in much more than a month's training for this IM. The race is on this coming Sunday. In the interest of full disclosure, I am going to try to finish, but if I'm not on the same lap as my friend (who has trained) when he is on h...

ANZAC Saturday
April 25th is ANZAC Day and commermerates the landings in Gallipoli in 1915 by the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. It's the most important day of remembrance in the Australian and New Zealand calander. This year is the centenary, and it remembers the over 10,000 Australian and New Zealand digg...

Don't overthink it. Don't start learning the lingo. Don't fuss over paces or plans or traing plans or anything that sounds like jargon. There'll be lots of time to overthink it later. Just run.

Re: Continuing to do things you aren't good at...
Life's too short to do something unless you're enjoying it. That enjoyment can come in many ways, and it's very personal. Sometimes the enjoyment is being good at something, sometimes the enjoyment is trying to be good at something, sometimes the enjoyment is just doing it. Being public or not has n...

School me on sweat saltiness
Why is my sweat sometimes so salty I can barely keep my eyes open it stings so much, and other times not salty at all?

Clearly I screwed up the quotes. Fixed it now in my post, but because you quoted my mis-quote I can't fix your perpetuation of my error.

What does this mean? Armstrong was the greatest at doping or Armstrong was the greatest cyclist amongst all the others that also doped?

Re: Thin to win
I found it a reasonably interesting article, as I am a heavier dude too. Like Ian, I tend to think though that it's really in the definition of strenuous activity that the crux lies. A gentle 30min jog doesn't really count as strenuous exercise, so the dangers of going out too often don't really app...

Re: What was your most memorable training run?
Great topic. Back in the fall of 2010 I was in very good shape. I'd made my goal of a <5 HIM in September, and was doing a crash 1-month training program for the NYC Marathon in early November. The plan for this particular run (given me by my de facto coach at the time, Jeff Seeley) was 32k with a 5...

The Pull Buoy Debate...
Very interesting. I've never been a fan but the logic in Sutton's piece makes sense to me. http://trisutto.com/the-pull-buoy-debate-2/ The fact is swimming with a modified pull-buoy will enhance every age-group athlete in some capacity with their swim. As for the debate about on how much pull-buoy w...

Re: Half Ironman Training Plan
..right now I feel like the bike is at odds w/ the run - giving to one means I have to take away from the other. That's the nature of the sport. We have to become good at three things at the expense of being great at one. Another piece of triathlon lore for you to ponder; bike training supports run...

Re: To flip or not to flip...
Do you do flip turns? Do you feel they are beneficial in training, even for a triathlete who races mostly in open water? I can understand doing them if you already know how, but is it worth it for someone who doesn't know how to learn? Strictly in terms of triathlon training; No. No, not really. No...

...and who would be competing only w/ herself... You have to define what this actually means for yourself. Last year I did a HIM on NO run training and still ran just over 2hr based on decent bike fitness and smart pacing. You could do the same - with an inverse prioritization - and just noodle thr...
