And my heart aches for those who just missed. Mcshame, you should totally apply to that contest. Andy, do I not remember reading that Hamilton is the fastest Boston Qualifying course in Canada? You'll get it there, I'm sure!

Hey Jes, Hamilton claims to be the #1 Boston Qualifier in Canada .... but, have yet to see a Canadian nor World Record set on that course, to my recollection ...

Besides, I hear that there will quite a contingent of Maniacs in Hamiton in 40 days ... :P  :shifty:

I'll be there trying to qualify in Ottawa in May if I don't get a BQ in Philly this year.

Anyone interesting in forming an RM Pace Team for sub 3-whatever in Ottawa ?? :? :shifty:

Sub 3????
Oh, maybe you mean BQ-3:XX mins?

I think that's a great idea. I've still got 2 years of 3:10 BQ, so I'm going to need to be 3:07ish. Having the support of a group of folks working together toward a BQ-3ish would be awesome.

Yep, if we all aim for your BQ time, Erin ... then we will all be but guaranteed BQ Entry for 2013 ... :shifty:

That's more along the lines of what I was thinking.

This year we had the 20/40/90 challenge- next year it could be the BQ minus X challenge.

Oh, I misread your other post Erin. I thought you meant the challenge thread would only be for those who needed close to 3 hours. :)

BQ-3-ish would be 3:52-ish for me. That's pretty scary, but we'll see how I do in NY. I'm thinking it won't really take -3, though. Next year it won't be as close with the times already 6 minutes faster; they might even be able to take everyone.

Depends on how much faster people can get. I doubt it will happen in one year (over 5000 people would have to run faster) but presumably people will start to train harder- they don't want to have to worry about this again so from now on the graduated registration period will still be in place. To register in the first week you would need new BQ-5.

Wow, tough moment. I was in a meeting and following the acceptances noted in the thread and then I ran to my desk to check if my name was there, it wasn't. I went back to the meeting and an email came in my blackberry saying I wasn't accepted. Hit me like a ton of bricks and I couldn't speak at the meeting as I was sure my voice would have broke... :(

I am honored that I was given the opportunity to apply and I'm seriously going to keep the registration and rejection emails in my shadowbox of my BQ in Niagara with the pictures and medal.

I will send my story to iRun as I think that my 2010 story is a good one. And it would be a good follow up story to the my half marathon PB that was in there...I will be creative writing tonight while the emotion is raw.

And whether that happens or not, I will get into marathon form again because there is a new 3:10 goal to be achieved. 3:15 will likely be enough, but someone need to pace Erin to his BQ... ;)

I will no longer live in the past on this thread, just the iRun submission. I would like to congratulate all those going to Boston. You all deserve to bask in the glory of your accomplishment. I'm truly happy for you.

Boston Accepted times for 2012

Postby canalrunner » Mon Sep 26, 2011 3:32 pm

Performances more than 74 seconds below the standard are accepted into the 2012 race
BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) today notified almost all applicants from the second week of 2012 Boston Marathon registration on whether they were accepted into the 116th running on April 16 or not. All notifications were sent via e-mail this afternoon.

Its new registration process allowed the fastest runners in relation to their qualifying times register first and fill the race based on the principles of athletic achievement and excellence – two hallmarks of the Boston Athletic Association for the past century.

In total, 8,596 applications were received during the second week, with the B.A.A. drawing the line after those qualifiers who beat their qualifying standard by 1 minute, 14 seconds. For clarification, the maximum qualifying times are listed below.

So it would seem next year's standards ought to be sufficiently tough. Nice that they were able to keep the cutoff not too far off the mark, too bad for all those that were so close. Congrats to all you qualifiers!

Between the extra 5 minutes, the number of "carryover" applicants this year who had preferred to race Boston in 2011, and a certain number of people who applied this year with a "one last time" mindset, I think we'll now be back to a few more years of seeing every BQ get in and having a couple of months for the cap to be reached. If so, this will restore some of the fall marathons as "double qualifiers".

From http://www.baa.org:

23,521 applications were received during the two weeks of registration.

20,081 applicants have been accepted or are in the process of being accepted, pending verification of qualifying performance (14,780 from Week One; 5301 from Week Two).

3,228 applicants were unable to be accepted due to the large number of eligible qualifiers who submitted an application for entry combined with field size limitations.

An additional 277 qualifiers who had run 10 or more consecutive Boston Marathons were also accepted.

Interesting that not only did they choose not to expand the field but they actually took LESS people than many had predicted. I wonder if this is because of where the cutoff would otherwise fall and whether they tried to find a natural "valley" in the distribution. Or maybe they didn't want to get to the 1000-2000 cutoff range for fear of criticism for cutting relatively few. Cutting over 3000 gives it a bit more legitimacy, I guess.

After reading through some posts around the Internet, I find it amusing that people are already talking about targeting their new BQ time since next year it should be enough. We should really take this year as a lesson to train your hardest and race your best race. Not just pace for a BQ. Who knows we may be faster than we think!

Not everyone has a cushion- for me if I can go for my BQ time it will be a very aggressive target and I'm quite sure it would be my best race. It's not an arbitrary number.
Most of those people saying they'll go for their new BQ times know how hard they had to work to get where they did.

And likely next year the minimum standard WILL be enough.
