Speedy 5000m times @ Diamond league

Postby MichaelMc » Fri Jun 04, 2010 4:00 pm

Sounds like a great race, and the US has reason to be excited about their runners: http://www.diamondleague-oslo.com/en/Li ... 000m-Men1/

Ethiopia positions #1 (Imane Merga) & 2 (Tariku Bekele), Kenya 4, 5, but USA 3, 6. Bernard Lagat 12:54, Chris Solinsky runs 12:56.

Could be an interesting year with Kenenisa Bekele out of action.

Can't believe Solinsky got beat by Lagat, thought he had it.

I'd like to link some video, but I don't have one. With 10 runners under 13 minutes it is the fastest 5k race in history, I think. An astonishing number of PBs run in addtion to the US 5000m record.

1 MERGA Imane ETH 12:53.81 PB
2 BEKELE Tariku ETH 12:53.97
3 LAGAT Bernard USA 12:54.12 AR
4 ROTICH Lucas Kimeli KEN 12:55.06 PB
5 CHEPKOK Vincent Kiprop KEN 12:56.32
6 SOLINSKY Chris USA 12:56.66 PB
7 BEZABEH Alemayehu ESP 12:57.25 NR
8 KISORIO Matthew Kipkoech KEN 12:57.83 PB
9 DABA Bekana ETH 12:58.51 PB
10 KOMON Leonard Patrick KEN 10 12:59.15
11 SHAHEEN Saif Saaeed 13:00.31
12 SOI Edwin Cheruiyot 13:07.70
13 SALEL Daniel Lemashon 13:08.23 PB
14 KIPCHOGE Eliud KEN 13:09.89 4 2
15 KUMA Abera ETH 13:10.89 PB
16 BIWOTT Yusuf Kibet KEN 13:15.33
17 ABSHIRO Ayele ETH 13:18.38

Really? Solinsky has one remarkable race at a longer distance, Lagat has a resume at 5000m and shorter that won't even fit on this page.

I miss Bekele. :( Too bad he struggles so much with injuries.

Very interesting results, though.

Must have been a real corker of a race, 10 under 13 minutes and (11th) SHAHEEN Saif Saaeed back from injury, it would be great to see him bang out another good steeple.

None of you have mentioned the 800 metres!
An event that has stagnated since the retirement of world record holder Wilson Kipketer.
David Rushida running 1:42:04 and Abubacker Kaki 1:42:23. Aged 21 and 20 respectively the thought of what they might do in the future races is an exciting prospect.

Also, did anyone else notice the men competed in 800m. Mile, and 5,000m.? Whereas for the women the only distance race was the Steeplechase the next closest was a 400m.
Not the quarry but the chase,
not the trophy but the race.

I don't think we've seen the end of Solinsky. :)

Of course not but one race that moves you to the truly elite level doesn't mean you're going to go to Europe and take down the best of the best. Lagat has over 10 years of that sort of experience and he's hardly slipped at all.

I know. And he was only a couple seconds behind in in the sub-13 pack which is amazing.

It was on CBC on the weekend, but you had to dig for it... was just called "Track and Field". :? I PVR'd it just in case it was something interesting, and turns out it was! :)

This is the name of the sport... they often cover the Diamond League events.
