pace bunny question

Postby alexk » Wed Sep 29, 2010 2:13 pm

What is the general rule for pace bunnies and assigned times? What should the difference be between your usual marathon time and bunny time? For example, if you run a 3:30 marathon, what time would you be a good bunny for?

Thanks
We train more joyfully and productively when we focus on the now, rather than on our future race day performance. It's a long road from here to there with many miles to go. We need to run each one. Accept where you are today and simply be thankful for the work you've accomplished. KA

I heard you should be able to run 20 minutes faster than what your pacing.

I was told 10 min for the half, so I'll agree with Steve, 20min for a marathon sounds reasonable.

In similar conditions, I'm guessing, because 20 minutes could well be the difference between a 10 C marathon and a 25 C marathon based on my recent experience/research.

It needs to be easy, because few bunnies are in peak racing form the day they are pacing. It is one thing to have a 3:10 PR, another to be in 3:10 shape; I like to be in shape to run 15 - 20 minutes faster than I'm pacing. That is why sub 3:30 bunnies are at a premium; to pace 3:15 you should be in sub 3hr shape, and willing to run one at 3:15.

Pacing is fun, though!

I had thought a 30 minute buffer was maybe the rule...I've been asked to pace a 3:45 group. I know I can do it with a certian amount of ease but am a bit concerned since I've never been a bunny before. I had already committed to pacing my brother in this same race for a 3:45 but pacing a family member is quite different than pacing a BQ group (will be lots of women my age looking for this time). I wouldn't feel nearly as badly if I didn't get my brother to the finish line in time - he's not as committed to his goal.

Looks like I've found a good compromise though. I'm going to pace the group through the first half and someone else will do the second. My brother and I can stay with the group or do our own thing - no pressure.

I'm looking forward to this - should be fun and a welcome change.

And I think it's good for a free entry too if I'm not mistaken. Maybe I'll volunteer my services for Vancouver next year.

Free entry, free hat & t-shirt, and TONS of attention: everyone loves the bunny! I highly recommend it.

Well there's talk of Iron Heather running Vancouver for a BQ next May, so I'd like to be in that group, but I think with the way she's learned to run this year she'll likely be in a faster group than the 3h40s. That's probably a pretty popular pace group, maybe I should email my friend the Race Director today.
