Racing Flats - Last minute decision

Postby Tarsals » Sat Nov 13, 2010 4:53 pm

I'm running a half marathon tomorrow, and hoping to PB. Current PB is 1:37:xx, hoping to go faster than 1:35, ideally down to the 1:33-1:34 range.

I have a pair of a new pair of Asics DS Racers (7.6oz) that I am contemplating using. I normally use GT 2150's (11.6oz).

I have done 2 runs in the flats:
1. Last week a slower-16k tempo run and it took a few km to adapt to the lessened support and lower ramp angle.
2. Today ran 4.5k easy in them, with only the first 1 km feeling odd.

Should I go for the half marathon in the flats? Or should I be doing shorter races in them first?

i say go for it. you've worn them for 20K without any issues (i'm assuming). you'll probably feel it a little more the next day. my legs feel a little more sore when i wear my flats for a half.

I read this a few times trying to figure out what Rascall Flatts has to do with tomorrow's race. I need a nap.

I'd definitely try it. 21.1 at race pace might be less time on your feet than the 16 you've tried. The last 5k might hurt, but heck, they SHOULD hurt if you're doing it right.

Have fun - I should be down in lots of time to see the finish. I'll be the guy with 2 small kids.

I go by the adage: Never do anything new on race day. But since you've run 16k on them one already, that isn't exactly new... Your call.

Doesn't matter anyway, since you're probably racing as I'm typing this.
Plan for 2017:
END-SURE 25k...done! 2:30:23
Spruce Woods Ultra volunteering...done!
Kettle Moraine 100
Western States 100 crewing
Falcon Fatass 50k
Superior 100

too risky, don't eff with your feet

although it does seem to be all the rage
next up:

This broken wing will fly again
One fine day
This blackbird's mute gonna sing again
One fine day

So all you sinners come out
And all you drunkards crawl out
Come into the light of one fine day

I gave in to peer pressure and used the racing flats.

Luckily it was good peer pressure. Super light. No pain. Feel great after. New PB! :)

Race report is up!

nice report. if you are like me you'll find you'll run more often in your light flats than your heavier training shoes. you just get used to the lightness
