Edmonton Police Half - hooray!

Postby smileyrunner » Sun Apr 26, 2009 2:28 pm

I am so happy it hurts! (in my hamstrings, and calves and.... :D )

I ran the Edmonton Police Half this morning and it was great. Calgary has had this race for a long time and I've been told there used to be one in Edmonton but this is the first one in some time. It was a really nice course starting in Fort Edmonton and then through Hawrelak, up to Valleyview Rd and then up Groat Road (I forgot how long that hill can seem) to come back.

I've been gearing up for this race and have been super consistent in my training and had no injuries so I was pretty excited going in. The half I did last year (Footstock in Cochrane) I finished in 2:26 and it was a flat course. That had been my first half so I was happy with just finishing. This course was harder and I had a goal time of 2:15. I really didn't know how things would go.

I finished in 2:06! I'm thrilled!

I don't post on here that often, but I am definitely on here everyday reading, learning and laughing. I feel so lucky to have found this community of supportive runners, and just felt I had to post about my race today! Ever the runner...I am now wondering if on a flat course I could run sub 2 hours.

I'm guessing last year's times were supposed to start with a 2?

Great improvement. You've for sure got a sub-2:00 in you.

My training log

Why practice running slow? It comes naturally!

Sweet race, especially this early in the year. I agree that sub-2 will soon be within reach, the main problem being that Alberta doesn't give you many easy courses to choose from (that hill at 7K in Cochrane is the biggest one I've ever encountered in a race). On the other hand, if you keep up the good training, the courses won't be able to stop you.

congrats on a great race! it definitely has some good hills in it.

They mentioned it on the news this evening and said there were around 850 runners, which is much better than they expected for the first year. Sounds like they're filling a need!
