I ran the Bread and Honey 5K this weekend; I hadn't run a 5k race in about 25 years so this was a journey through the past for me, and I was counting it as a PB no matter what!
Event highlight included meeting dgrant, RobbieT, and flexrun pre-race and additionally with Doonst and quickchick afterwards. Great to chat everyone!
I picked a starting spot a few metres back from the front and seconds after the race began a photographer-person on a bike got flattened by the onslaught of runners. That was strange.
On to the race!
Splits: 1km - I can still see RobbieT; uh-oh I'm probably going too fast better slow down; 2nd km - that was too much slow down; 3rd km, OK finally the right pace; 4th km - there's still 2 km to go!; oi! 5th km- where is that finish line, what does the clock say? 19:xx, huh?, well better give 'er ....clock time 19:55! - chip: -19:48 - What, how'd I do that?.....
then I see why....Doonst is standing by the finish line and the PB karma must have rubbed off on me too! Thanks Doonst, the legend grows!

For your first 5k in 25 years that's a pretty impressive result.
The 5k is tricky - you don't get a lot of opportunity to fix pacing errors in one of these, and I'd imagine that with a bit more practice you could drop some time by pacing yourself right from the gun.
Nice job!

Why practice running slow? It comes naturally!

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement! Much appreciated!
I should've included in the original post that based on recent 10km times I was aiming for 21min in this race, my race strategy was just to go as fast as I could and getting sub-20 was a total surprise!
Absolutely right, I had an almost 30sec swing between the first and second km, something that I am sure a more experienced racer would not do!
Ha, no pressure there...unfortunately flexrun is also in my age group and I won't be catching him anytime soon! On the other hand, if he keeps winning the open masters awards, my chances in the AGs is better

It was great to meet you also. Excellent pb ! You must be very happy with your results, especially with not having run a 5k in so long. Your time will improve, keep up the good work.
