Re: Women's Running Tees
The New Balance shirts from the Around the Bay road race are the best fit I've found. The ones from the last couple of years have a lower neckline which is probably more fashionable but less practical for cooler spring and fall runs though. I tend to prefer the ones from the few years before that fo...

Re: Around the Bay 2014
Have they changed the water stations as well as the route? The jpeg and pdf maps on the race website show the water stations. I don't recall a water station at 17.5K before. The water stations look more evenly spaced than before. I recall in the middle of the race that water stations used to seem fe...

Re: OOOH It burns, the googles, they do nothing!
I don't have a problem with my skin after swimming but I have a problem with sneezing. I have found that soaping up twice, and shampooing twice, seems to help. Also lots of moisturizer immediately after the shower helps. I have heard a theory that if you shower before getting into the pool, the regu...

Re: 2013 Around The Bay
I am a waay back of the pack runner, have run the race 6 times, and seen a train twice - once (maybe 2005 or 6) I arrived just as the gates went up, and maybe 2010 or 11 I could see a train coming in the distance as I crossed.

Re: Swimming...
I haven't been there in a while, but the Team Aquatic Supplies store in Burlington Ontario used to have a box of latex caps for $1 - unpopular colours or extras printed with some obscure club logo. They apparently have a location in North Vancouver: http://www.team-aquatic.com" onclick="window.open(...

Re: swimming goggles
Some are bigger/smaller, some are more round/oval, and you just have to keep trying till you find a pair that doesn't leak on your particular face. Slight goggle face may be unavoidable. I find it gets worse as I get older, my guess being the skin isn't as resilient. But major goggle face due to wea...

Re: How many pairs of shoes do you go through?
I try to have 3 active pairs. The newest pair is only worn for my long runs. The in between pair is for medium distance runs. The oldest pair is for runs of 4-5K or under. I find I can do shorter runs in old shoes with no adverse effects. I was able to double the life of my shoes, and thus cut my sh...

Hi Sandra - thanks very much for checking.
Now I just have to deal with the minor detail of training!

Does ATB still allow bib transfers?
I checked the Around the Bay road race site and they have "Can I transfer my entry to a friend" in their FAQs but with no answer. I understand they've allowed transfers for a fee before. I expect the race will be sold out long before I know if my training has gone well enough to run it. Th...

Re: Chilly Half Marathon - March 4, 2012 (Burlington)
Can someone explain the jacket sizing to me? It says the dimensions are those of the garment. The Medium has a 42 inch chest which I'm guessing would correspond to about 36 inches for the person wearing it (6 inches difference). But the waist is 28 inches, which would imply a 22 inch waist for the w...

Re: Apres Swim wooziness
I get something like that occasionally, but usually only for about 5 minutes, and usually if it's been too long since I've eaten. Maybe try a sports drink rather than plain water in your water bottle during swim workouts. Also try sitting on the deck for a minute or two after getting out of the pool...

Re: Funny Ultra Quips
Well I'm not an ultra runner so I don't know if an ultra runner would find this funny, but I overheard this a couple of years back at Sulphur Springs: "We ran [I can't remember the name of the ultra she mentioned] last weekend, and by Wednesday I still couldn't walk, but then [she mentioned a f...

Can't make it, but I always thought the Thousand Islands Parkway would be a good spot for a race. Have fun!

Re: Marathoning for Mortals
Thanks for the comments. I agree with both of you – the general upbeat tone of the book is helpful, and regardless of why the run/walk combo works, for many of us it does indeed work. I am however puzzled by the specific training program. I’ve since returned the book to the library, but if my notes ...

Marathoning for Mortals
I was looking through the training programs in Running for Mortals. In particular I was interested in the run-walk marathon program. Presumably this type of program is aimed at beginning marathoners. Has anyone used this program and if so were you happy with the outcome?
