Re: Vulture Bait
It would be nice to try a 50K again, but, alas, I am out of holidays for this calendar year . . .
Running is cheaper than therapy and I need a lot of therapy.

Only 53 spots left in this year's Vulture Bait. It will sell out, so if you're sitting on the fence, act now.
Looking forward to my second time at VB.

Arg! Can't go anyways. School thing that weekend... this is the 3rd race where this has happened. I'm not liking these coincidences.

Hi All,
I will be trying to finish 50km at Vulture Bait. This will be my 1st time and because my training due to catching a cold and acting up IT issues was not the best last few weeks please do not kick my butt to hard when you will see me walking( crawling ) to the finish line.
Good Luck to Everyone

Welcome to RunningMania, darek! How did you hear about this site?
Hope you have a good race at Vulture Bait. Not to worry, there will be lots of people crawling and walking on the trails, so you won't feel alone.
A few of us will be wearing stuff that has the RM logo on it. If you see us, say hi and introduce yourself. There's a growing number of ultra and trail runners here and it's always nice to put a face to a name.

So far, the weather outlook is good. Its supposed to be a dry mostly sunny week leading up to a nice day on the 16th. Nice fast course!

Hi UltraQueenga,
Thanks for the welcome. Well I read a few blogs that were referring to running maniacs and I noticed the RM logo on pics from OUSER races.
I will say hi for sure.
See you in London

Re: Vulture Bait
I am possibly going to be there to support maniacs and Waterloo RR entrants. It depends on ther weather as Mrs. Tortoise has the car and I will have the Motorcycle. What time should I arrive so as not to get caught up with the race and to get parking. wWere do one park? My plan is to arrive around 8:15 to 8:30 .

You should be fine as long as you're there before the start. Its a conservation area, with parking lots. It would be good to see you out cheering.
In other news, it sold out now.

Re: Vulture Bait
Hi All.
New to the board, looks like a great resource.
I am running the 50k this weekend and have been somewhat unable to get much information as to what I should expect at Vulture Bait. This is my first ultra, but I have been running the Bruce Trail for a couple of years, so I have logged many, many, miles on trails.
I just recently broke 4 hours in the marathon and am in about 3:50 marathon shape at the moment. Can anyone help me out with a pacing strategy for Vulture Bait as I have no idea how technical or how much elevation change to expect? Ideally, I would love to shoot for a sub-5 hour finish and go out just under 6 minute k's. I have been working hard on hills and some fairly technical single-track so I am certainly used to elevation change and attempting not to stumble over roots and rocks.
Here are some rough times for me over various distances to give you a better idea of my fitness: (This is all on pavement of course)
5k - 20:30
10k - 45:00
Half - 1:46
30k - 2:40
Full - 3:50
All input would be welcome as I am not sure if 5 hours if a reasonable goal or not. Your thoughts? Thanks in advance, and it is great to have found such an active community!

Re: Vulture Bait
Welcome Brent!
My road race times are pretty close to yours (marathon PB=3:48, 30 km=2:38). I've done many 50 km races, but never broken 5 hours (even on road). Vulture Bait is among the "easier" trail courses, and I usually finish around 5:30. However, for races of 50 km and longer, I'm really not "racing" them in the same way that I'd race a marathon or a 30 km. I'm just out there enjoying the course and the atmosphere, with maybe slightly more effort than a training run.
So yes, I think with some actual effort (which it sounds like you're willing to give), 5 hours for Vulture Bait isn't out of the question.
The course has a number of small hills but no serious climbs (that I can recall). Most people find the main challenge to be the (many) roots that are conveniently hidden under the autumn leaves. Be prepared for a stumble or two.
