Tori's big PB RMB

Postby Tori » Sun Oct 26, 2008 3:02 pm

I had asked my friend to pace me for this race a couple weeks ago because I really wanted to get under 1hr and my goal was 56:00. She doesn't let me wuss out and really pushes me (she runs a 1:43 1/2 so I have to work hard to keep up) and she has really helped me have a running breakthrough in the last few weeks. So the deal was:
1. I wasn't allowed to ask what my pace was
2. I wasn't allowed to know how long we had run for
3. We weren't running 10 and 1's

Luckily Andy offered his babysitting services to my sweet rent-a-baby and we dropped him off and went to the start line. (I think Andy was excited to run around with my BOB  )

We took about 30 seconds to cross the start line and had a nice speedy 5k and saw Jesse cheering us on. I took my first gel at 30 minutes somewhere around the 6k mark and we kept running along. I was feeling a bit tired around 7k and my friend asked if I needed to slow down. I said no (trying not to wuss out) and she asked me to guess what were running at. I said 5:40s and she said you will be happy when I tell you at the finish line (it was actually 5:20s but felt slower to me). We got a quick break at the 8k water station and then trudged on.

I saw Marg screaming "here comes Tori" to Nick and Lorne around the last km. Then I saw Claudie and Andy looking after Owen who had fallen asleep in his stroller. (He is such a tough baby to manage. )

I turned the corner and could see the timer. I screamed "holy s*%t" and we crossed the line at 53:50!!! A huge PB for me, the last 10k I ran at RMB was 1:02 in 2006.

There was a little confusion with the final time. The clock said 53:50 and the official time said 54:50 so I am not quite sure. :? We stopped the Garmin too late when we were getting our chips cut off. So with our start time it is either of PB of 53:20 or 54:20. Either way I will take it.

A yummy M&G after the race made for a great day!

So in 9 months of post-baby running I have gone from a PPPB (post pregnancy PB aka PW) to an honest to goodness 7-8 minutes PB in the 10k.

PPPB St Patrick's Day 5k 32:00 - baby is 7 weeks old
PPPB NCM 10k 1:06 - baby is 4 months old
PB RMB 10k - 53:20/54:20 - baby is 9 months old

I am really excited to finish up a marathon for Owen's 1st b-day in January. I hope it will be a good one.

And, yes, Owen is such an easy guy to take care of ... Had I known they'd be taking late registration :?

That's great and a really interesting way to run a race. Pacing people is interesting (I've only ever paced my daughter in a few 5ks). Your friend obviously did a great job getting you through that fast.

Congrats

Tori
Way to go!!!!!!! You friend might of been the one keeping track of the time and doing the pacing, but it was your legs that were moving that fast. Congrats on your fantastic PB.. I'm both excited and happy for you. I keep hearing what a darling little Owen is. I think a trip to the east to meet some maniac's is in order. I can only dream....
Way to run there speedy.... Looking forward to more fast race reports from you....
